Garden – A new book by William Dangar

William Dangar’s new book Garden  is a journey through series of twenty inspiring, emotive and lyrical gardens.

Each is photographed at its optimum moment – not when newly planted – but when nature has reasserted itself and there is certain expressiveness, a sense of wildness, breaking through the original structure and order.

Beginning with an exploration of Will’s World in words and photographs that paint an evocative portrait of the things that inspire him to create. The images are artistic and abstract while the words tell the story of his career to date as well as the things that move and matter to him.

The book showcases Will’s skill, ease and the grand sweep of his vision, while deconstructing the elements of the garden’s design and planting.

Shot in its entirety by photographer Prue Ruscoe, who has been capturing Will’s gardens for over 10 years, the book has a consistently strong aesthetic. ‘Prue has a great feeling for garden spaces, knowing instinctively when the light is right, when the composition gels and how to reveal the relationship with built form’, says Will.

True to Will’s collaborative ethos, the narrative has been created and the book’s concept developed working with leading architecture and interiors author Karen McCartney. ‘This project was a great opportunity for me to understand the process of creating a garden, the planting and landscaping decisions alongside the relationship between architecture and interiors in order to deliver a holistic experience’, says Karen.

The bold, characterful book design was created by award-winning designer Evi O who has a wealth of experience in the fields of architecture, interiors, food and lifestyle publishing. ‘Working with Will has been fun. We were all on the same page visually which made this a great project to work on’, she says.

Each project is described through Will’s frank perspective chronicling the challenges, the planting choices, the collaborations, the relationships and the joy that makes these gardens significant.
